DURING THE EXCAVATION of Pompeii, archeologists found the body of a young Roman soldier who had been standing guard duty when Vesuvius erupted. He had remained at his post while being covered with molten lava.
That’s the kind of discipline we need!
The East Is Read
WE ALL KNOW that the Hitler-Stalin Pact was a political atrocity, but not everyone realizes it was totally idiotic from a strictly military perspective. The occupation of Eastern Poland, Karelia, and the Baltic States forced the Red Army to move out of its carefully prepared defensive positions and spread itself thin to hold down the hostile populations. Being deployed so close to the German lines, they were scooped up before they realized where the main offensives were coming from.
A survey taken by a Budapest radio station found that very few Hungarians could identify Marx and Engels. One woman thought that Marx had translated Lenin’s works into Hungarian. Another man said he must have been absent from school that day. This is called “Preserving the Gains of the October Revolution.”
When the Russian Army was driven out of the Ukraine in 1941, many peasants broke up the collective farms they had been forced onto and divided up the land. The German Todt Commission, following on the heels of the Wehrmacht, re-established the collectives. The structure and grain quotas remained the same. Only the destination changed, from Moscow to Berlin.
Really Sick Jokes
TEAMSTER PRESIDENT Jackie Presser claims that the FBI made him put several of his playmates on the union payroll while he was acting as a snitch. Just like in Shel Silverstein’s classic song: “They Held Me Down and Put It Up My Nose.”
A California judge has ruled that anybody who invests in a Michael Cimino movie may be certified mentally incompetent and subject to involuntary commitment on the basis of that evidence alone.
Students from thousands of schools have shown their faith in the space program by volunteering their teachers for the next shuttle flight.
