The U-T Writing Group consisted of several faculty members at the University of Texas, Austin. They wrote a two-part article in defense of multiculturalism that was originally published in the weekly cultural supplement to the U-T Daily Texas. Conservative critics had denounced the Ph.D. English program’s introductory writing syllabus on Ethnic and Third World Literatures, calling it “political indoctrination.” It was then cancelled by the administration. Collective authors are Brian Bremen and Ann Cvetkovich, assistant professors in the Department of English; Michael Hanchard, assistant professor in the Center for African and Afro-American Studies; Barbara Harlow, associate professor in the Department of English; Ann Norton, professor in the Department of Government; Gretchen Ritter, lecturer in the Department of Government; and Ramon Saldivar, professor in the Department of English. This text is slightly abridged.
