Robin D. G. Kelley is the Gary B. Nash Professor of American History at UCLA. He is the author of many books on African-American history and culture. His first book was Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists During the Great Depression (1990). Subsequent books include the award-winning biography Thelonious Monk: The Life and Times of an American Original (2009).
