Prudence Cumberbatch is assistant professor of Africana Studies and coordinator of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Brooklyn College, CUNY. She is the author of the essay, “What ‘the Cause’ Needs Is A ‘Brainy and Energetic Woman’: A Study of Female Charismatic Leadership in Baltimore,” in Want to Start a Revolution? Radical Women in the Black Freedom Struggle (NYU Press, 2009). She served as co-editor (with Dayo Gore and Sarah Haley) of a special issue of Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Culture, and Society.
