Muchtar Pakpahan is pro-democracy lawyer. He formed the Indonesian Workers Welfare Union (SBSI) in 1992, the only independent trade union at that time. From 1992 to 2003 he was the chairperson of the union. During that period he was arrested, beaten and tried for “inciting workers.”
