Mary Burgan served as the general secretary of the American Association of University Professors from 1994 to 2004. She was the author of Illness, Gender, and Writing: The Case of Katherine Mansfield (1994) and What Ever Happened to the Faculty? Drift and Decision in Higher Education (2006). She taught English at the University of Indiana at Bloomington and died in 2017.
