Janet Siskind taught anthropology at Rutgers University. To Hunt in the Morning (1973) is the result of her fieldwork in the Amazon. Her Rum and Axes: The Rise of a Connecticut Merchant Family, 1795-1850 (2001) examines the rise of U.S. industrial capitalism. Since her retirement she has become a painter and printmaker.
