Dennis Brutus, was a South African poet and prominent spokesperson in the anti-apartheid movement. He was forced into exile and only returned to the new South Africa, where he died in 2009. While living in the United States, U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service attempted to deport him but was forced to retreat because of the public outcry. Brutus taught literature at a number of U.S. universities including Swarthmore College, Cornell University and the University of Pittsburgh.
