David Matthews is course director for the undergraduate health and social care programme at Bangor University, Wales, and a member of the University and College Union. He is the author of several articles and books that adopt a Marxist understanding of the welfare state and welfare issues. His latest books include The Class Struggle and Welfare (Monthly Review Press), and Welfare for a Humane Future (Daraja Press) co-authored with Howard Waitzkin.
