César J. Ayala is a professor of sociology at UCLA. He co-authored, with Laird Bergad, Agrarian Puerto Rico: Reconsidering Rural Economy and Society, 1899-1940 (Cambridge University Press, 2020). His first book was American Sugar Kingdom: The Plantation Economy of the Spanish Caribbean, 1898-1934 (University of North Carolina Press, 1999).
