Causte Lexiuse, general secretary of the Haitian General Federation of Workers (CGT), was arrested, tortured and imprisoned just prior to the April 26, 1993 general strike. As a result of the torture, Lexiuse spent almost a month in a military hospital, undergoing three operations. Because of the continuing repressive political situation in Haiti he has been living in the United States.
