C.J. Hawking was a member of the Chicago Staley Workers Solidarity Committee and a volunteer organizer at the Decatur Campaign for Justice office. She co-authored, with Steven Ashby, Staley: The Fight for the New Labor Movement. As the executive director of Rise Chicago, Rev. Hawking has been a supporter of the teachers strikes and anti-police brutality campaigns in Chicago.
