Bernadette Devlin McAliskey emerged as a leader in the Northern Ireland civil rights movement in 1968; the following year she was elected to the British Parliament (1969-74). She campaigned against internment without trial between 1971-75 and supported Irish political prisoners held in English jails. A defender of the IRA, she maintained an independent socialist perspective. She continues to be involved in community struggles.
