Alan Hirsch became a student activist in high school. As chair of the student-led National Union of South African Students he denounced the apartheid regime, forged an alliance with the United Democratic Front (UDF) and became an activist in the 1980s. As a socially engaged researcher, he has taught at University of Cape Town and was part of the team that founded the Mandela School of Public Governance.
