AGAINST THE CURRENT is sponsored by SOLIDARITY, a socialist, feminist and anti-racist organization founded in 1986. The organization is based on principles of “socialism from below” — the view that liberation from exploitation and oppression can come only from mass self-organized movements of working class and oppressed peoples, with workers’ democracy and popular power at the center of a new society.
Solidarity seeks to being together socialist activists from diverse traditions who support these principles. We draw from the revolutionary experiences of the 20th and early 21st centuries, but with a critical perspective and without illusions that a model from one struggle can be mechanically be transposed to others.
Our fight for social justice is an international struggle. This is particularly evident in a world where the degradation of the world’s resources threatens not just biodiversity but humanity.
We stand with #Black Lives Matter and all movements against oppressive structures, systemic racism, sexism, homophobia and Islamophobia. We work to rebuild a dynamic labor movement rooted in rank and file activity, and we support efforts for independent political action as alternatives to the capitalist Democratic and Republican parties.
