Eric Chester joined SDS as a student at the University of Michigan in the 1960s. A socialist and former economics professor, he is the author of four books, including True Mission: Socialists and the Labor Party Question in the U.S. and Rag-Tags, Scum, Riff-Raff and Commies: The U.S. Intervention in the Dominican Republic, 1965–1966
